Rawhide Braiding

The art of rawhide braiding dates back hundreds of years. Much of the art of braiding has been closely held "secrets" that were handed down from father to son, or from one trusted companion to another. Because of the many and varied intricacies of rawhide braiding, it takes many years for an apprentice to develop to a high quality level, even under the tutelage of a seasoned veteran.

Dan has spent many years fine-tunning the craftsmanship and techniques used in his rawhidebraiding and leather braiding. Rawhide is frequently and erroneouly called "leather." Leather is different than rawhide. Rawhide is the untreated hide of an animal that remains in its natural state. Unlike many others in his feild, Dan creates each of his pieces using only rawhide he cuts himself, which usually consists of the hide from an older cow. From skinning the animal, to strechiching the hide, to cutting the rawhide strings, Dan spends many hours on his craft prior to even beginning the actual braiding process.

"A true cowboy takes pride in not only their horsemanship but in the use and appearance of their gear."
